However, I luckily saw this on EW and jumped on the chance to plead my case (begged really) for an advanced copy.

The author captured the essence of a toxic person so vividly in her that I would shiver every time she came onto the page and felt every bit of Lily’s apprehension and fear. Eighteen-year-old Lily does everything to please her mother; she carries out her every whim, makes her spoiled juice every night and even dyes her hair and paints her face to look more like the good Chinese daughter she wants. This is a literary novel exploring the nuanced, complex relationships between a family riddled with generational abuse. Vitamin C is not just a vitamin but also an antioxidant that science, such as a 2017 publication in Nutrients, says serves as an immune defender on multiple fronts, including protecting against harmful pathogens by strengthening the skin's natural barriers and protecting the body from oxidative stress and inflammation, which can wreak havoc on your health. As she pieces together the truth of her mother's life, and her own, she finds herself broken and longing for oblivion.

The dysfunctional (and abusive) relationship between Lily and her mother is the focus, but the rest of her family doesn’t fare well either. And if you need one more reason to eat it, 1 cup of diced watermelon offers a half-cup of water, per the USDA. The pace is pitched extremely well and I genuinely couldn’t put it down as this is a psychological thriller that has you in its grip throughout. As Ella King delves deeper into Lily’s family, Ella shows us some intense scenes that occur between them, some, which are also, quite upsetting to read. As disturbing as the content of this novel was, Kings writing is an aesthetic masterpiece - a sensory feast!

This is a potent uncovering of a toxic mother/daughter relationship, generational trauma, and a daughter's attempts to break free - I'm sure many readers will love it but me, I just feel like I've read this story so many times before in contemporary fiction. As long-hidden truths begin to emerge and Lily slowly unlocks the mysteries surrounding Mama, she thinks she’s finally found the way to be the perfect daughter and win Mama’s approval. I’m not even sure I fully understood it but I can say the author did a tremendous job in setting out a totally menacing storyline. And then the memories start, flashbacks that don't belong to Lily at all, but are her mother's memories; and as Lily starts to unwrap that mystery, the story of her own family is unfolded right alongside it.With Lily and her mama so vividly painted from the start, Bad Fruit quickly grips you, unfolding a complex family dynamic and a girl starting to question what she thought she knew. Bad Fruit heralds a seriously impressive new talent in Ella King CHRIS WHITAKERMasterful in its evocation of the complexity of mother-daughter relationships . i’m not going to lie and say i flew through this book, because in all honesty i had to take days off of reading before picking it back up. Concept of Genesis and the original sin with eve that offers an apple to Adam by subjecting him to temptation under the gaze of the serpent symbolizing evil.

Full disclosure, first person narratives are not my favourite, especially when there's trauma involved, it can be exhausting, so I think this is definitely a case of "it's not you, it's me" as most reviews are 4 and 5 star. Bad Fruit occupies that liminal space between psychological thriller and horror, beautifully written and incredibly disturbing. As she works through what this could mean, her already volatile relationship with her mother becomes increasingly tense.

Mở đầu truyện với việc bà May - mẹ của Lily đang cãi nhau với bố của Lily về việc bà nghi ngờ chồng đang ngoại tình với cô con dâu cũ. It becomes increasing apparent that Charlie will be no help and may even be complicit in his children’s terrible abuse.
