Overall I am really impressed and it would be a perfect rulebook if not for the subpar setup section. Different civilizations gain bonuses for specific actions, and that is where the asymmetrical faction design really shows. On your turn you can take one of the 6 actions and each one can be taken multiple times over the course of the round if you want. As wonderfully utilitarian as the trays are for tracking your resources, I do not like how sometimes the sliders that you use for keeping stats of your gold, materials and science are stubborn and do not want to fit in their slot.

You don’t get second chances on this (some races bend this rule) so if you continually draw tiles that are filled with ancients you might be stuck trying to beef up your ships JUST to move forward. At the time I was in desperate need of a good space game and I thought it looked pretty great by all accounts, so I backed it. Eclipse has so many awesome features, so I’m going to highlight three before I go into what makes this game special at two players: ship customisation, resource management and component quality. HIGHLY detailed and foreboding gazing over the rest of the board just tempting players to take it on.

This all means that in the games I’ve played, combat tends to be a late game rush as various players finally decide that now is the time to throw around those fleets that they’ve been building up since turn one.

The final action, influencing, is used less frequently, but allows you to take control of empty sectors and gain more colony ships to settle new planets. What this means is that you might not ever connect paths between players if you choose to not explore specific pathways. Beyond the amazing individual player trays there are specific trays that hold the tech and upgrade tiles.

I love the layout as well, with sidebars explaining the actions and the middle of the pages showing picture examples. Influence: Shift control of sectors you have access to, and give yourself the capability to colonise more planets than normal (leading to extra resources).

I love complex games, but I know not everyone can get into them, however once you explain a few of the game concepts Eclipse Second Dawn is actually shocking easy to learn and play! Not only that but the way the insert sits atop the lid makes it double layered so the population cubes sit neatly down in it sturdy and secure. Love the exploring, the ship blueprint plans and how you can try completely different ship parts and strategies.
