Description

Gobbolino is such a cute little thing that every setback in his adventure to find a kitchen was really sad and you wished him all the best.

A perfect story for A Puffin Book with charming black and white illustrations by the author, Ursula Moray Williams. My daughter (aged 6) got a little upset with the book a few times, as life is repeatedly harsh on Gobbolino, and though the ending was happy, it made her quite angry! Deși Gobbolino a fost adorabil, printre cele mai simpatice pisici din cărți despre care am citite, nu prea am fost de acord cu finalul. Initially distraught, he soon realises that he can now pursue his own dreams, and embarks on a great adventure to seek out his heart's desire. One kitten, Scootica, is black with green eyes (as is traditional for a witch's cat) wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and become apprenticed to a witch. A witch's kitten who wants to be good and be a nice family's kitchen cat, but never quite gets it right.

First published in the 1940s, the story of Gobbolino the witch's cat with one white paw and bright blue eyes, has been delighting generations of young readers. It is so monotonous, I could barely bring myself to read on, but I wanted to finish it since I knew I enjoyed it as a child. Blessed with some magic, Gobbolino is able to use this to his advantage at times, but superstition follows him wherever he goes.

And in the end he is accepted - because he has been changed into something else and looks different. The pedlar-woman leaves him in the care of his sister, Sootica, and her mistress, but once again he is unable to complete his tasks. First published in 1942, Gobbolino the Witch's Cat continues to delight children - a true modern classic. While reading this, I thought about all the stray cats in the world, all the abandoned ones, the unwanted, the discarded furry creatures and I wished with all my heart that they find a place to settle, to curl in, by the fire with a warm milk or a blanket to comfort them, a loving family to love them forever. What made most of this story fun to read was the somewhere-inbetween-ness of Gobbolino, the kind-hearted witch's cat with blue eyes and one white paw.

Romanul acesta nu e doar despre un pisoi amărât, ci e și un pretext de a vorbi despre fiecare copil sau chiar adult care încearcă să se integreze undeva și să se facă plăcut. I love this story of a little cat who, though born to a witch's cat, just isn't cut out to be a witch's cat like his mother and sister. Although his mother Grimalkin and sister Sootica are both witch's cats, Gobbolino longs to be a kitchen cat instead, to be loved rather than feared. Ursula Moray-Williams' The Further Adventures of Gobbolino and the Little Wooden Horse was originally published in 1984 and continues to be one of the most-loved classic stories of children's literature. It is beautifully written, and I love it now as an adult as much as I did 30 years ago when I read it the first time.

With lots of fairly short episodes, it will make a good bedtime series for several nights, and even lead to discussions about differing beliefs, about witches and treating others with kindness. I bought this book so that I could read it to my children, and hope that they would love it as much as I did as a child. My feeling of dissatisfaction is probably more with the similarity between Gobbolino's world and the actual world we all live in, rather than the story that pointed to the similarity. It's just the beginning of many exciting, magical and sometimes dangerous adventures for these two brave and kind-hearted friends. De aceea m-a dezamăgit finalul, dar per total e o poveste tare drăgălașă, potrivită atât pentru copii, cât și pentru adulți.
