Then one of her friends who worked down The Grapes was off sick, and the landlord said she’d suggested Queenie for a stand-in. But with strong female characters, an emotive plot of an unloved brother and a thrilling narrative, it turned out to be a great read! She has a luxurious lifestyle but no one to share it with, and Max clearly thinks she is in danger too. There is a wheen of bad language, too, but you couldn’t have an authentic story about East End gangsters without that, so I had no objection to it. Nora is killed by Jonjo and Bruno goes it alone in London determined to work for the Delaneys, the rival gang.

Non-working examples: dead, cracked, broken/bleeding LCD (screen), not powering up, speaker/mic faults, broken aerial, etc. He’d shown up in The Grapes, suited and booted, handsome, merry-eyed, a commercial traveller with a seductive line in patter.

As I’d suspected, there was violence from the very beginning, but it is never too graphic, thankfully, and is always secondary to the main theme of Max and Annie’s relationship, and to development of the characters. Smartspot’s valuations for products are the express property of the Company and the data for such valuations remains, in their entirety, vested in the Company. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The story zips along, love, death and betrayal in equal measure, bad boy comes good, family is everything and I feel there’s more to come. The relationships they hold with family and friends, as well as the morals they hold, became a pinnacle part of the story and they were so protective of each other, making them relatable.

The story begins with Max's mother Queenie, in an intriguing plot line that holds this story together. He was forever thinking up new and inventive ways of bringing in cash, because he could see quite clearly that Queenie was just about working herself to death. I’m hoping there’s more to tell as I’m sure these great characters still have plenty of life left in them yet. As a new comer to this series, there was much to catch-up on, because this book covers a lot of gangland ground, but Keane fills in just enough detail to keep you up to date with the broad strokes of the relationship between Max and Annie, the significant events that brought them together and then parted them, and the fierce rivalry between the Caters and the Delaneys that has built to boiling point over the years.
