The 12-40 balances really nicely on the E-M1, although on the smaller OM-Ds and PENs I'd recommend an additional grip piece to counter the front heaviness. It was way back in 2014 that we reviewed the first version of this lens, but now we have an updated Mk II, with the new ZERO coating and IP53-rated dust and splashproof construction.

A ZERO lens coating has also been applied to improve contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. The manual focus is a joy with the Olympus push-pull manual focus clutch mechanism and the build quality is fantastic. To my surprise, I actually ended up wanting the combo by my side at all times, so I upgraded to a bigger bag. Obviously diffraction begins to have an impact overall as you stop way down, but at 12mm, for example, each bit you stop down you lose a little bit of micro contrast.

With the 12-40mm lens attached to an Olympus OM-D E-M1 body, focusing is extremely quick in most situations. If you’re using the simulated OVF function, you’ll get the best autofocus performance in terms of accuracy, speed, and all. I still love the Pany 25mm and the images it puts out, and it’ll still be my go to when want the max DOF and sharpness or I’m taking portraits and the conditions aren’t a worry. Vignetting on the Olympus 12-40mm lens is very well controlled throughout the entire aperture range and at all focal lengths.I develop this alongside my passion for landscape photography, exploring the nearby Peak District on a regular basis. I was very much put off by the size at first but after some shooting, I really didn’t care that much!

Comparatively speaking, it doesn’t shine as much compared to many of the other PRO-monikered lenses from OM System. If it is a problem, just set the aperture to f/4 to get photos that are evenly sharp from corner to corner. The image quality of this lens is so good that I often don’t miss my prime lenses unless I want a faster aperture. You can upload: image, audio, video, document, spreadsheet, interactive, text, archive, code, other. So this lens for me not only completely replaced the Oly 12-50mm, but most importantly it also covers a lot of the shots and situations that would normally have me reaching for my Pany 25mm. When mounting this lens to a camera, it feels very securely locked in the mount, with the weather-sealing gasket providing a tight, reassuringly snug fit. This week away is a prime example- I have brought extra stuff out of a force of habit, but the extra lens, the dust blower and loads of my extras lived either in my bag or AirBNB and didn’t see the light of day.
